The Difference Between Intuition and Psychic

Updated: 2 days ago

History tells us it’s not uncommon for people to think that if someone says they have psychic abilities, a.k.a. woo woo, they’re immediately seen as a scam artist, a liar in some way or a bit crazy. Plus, that they’re only out to take your money. Unfortunately, they are partly right. Are there people out that are still trying to scam you? Absolutely, in many ways and not just from those that call themselves psychic. But I feel this is changing for the better and eventually the word won’t sound so dirty.

I myself, like many, use the word intuitive instead. It seems to be a more trusting and less intimidating descriptive word. But actually, psychic is truer in meaning. I’ll explain the difference as I and many others see it.

Yourr soul being can be divided into three parts, often referred to as the body, mind and soul/ spirit. There’s also the lower, middle and higher self. The lower self is made up of your physical, primal self, your animal instincts. The middle self is your humanness. It’s your ego and the part of you that plans and thinks. It’s where your intuitive self lies. Then there’s the higher self. This is where you connect to the divine and is were your psychic abilities lie.

Think of yourself as Sherlock Holmes and your inner detective is at work giving you clues. Your physical body is always looking, listening and feeling, which are giving you the clues. It’s where you feel and pick up on those energetic messages, often felt in the gut.

Sometimes we pay close attention to those clues in order to put the pieces of the puzzle together. That’s using your intuition. We all have the ability, but we often don’t pay attention. You know the old saying, “use it or loose it”? This refers as much to strengthening your intuition as it does to strengthening your muscles. Bring out your inner Sherlock and practice paying attention to the clues all around you.

Your psychic abilities take your intuition a step up to the higher self, your connection to the divine. It’s where your natural ability to sense energy together with a divine connection that gives you information that’s often not based in any facts. It’s where you may, but not always, get a vision of the future. Later, facts may prove you were correct or not. Those interpretations of the psychic messages you get may not be of clear understanding and that’s okay. With practice, just as with intuition, those messages can become clearer and stronger. Meditation plays a big role in building and strengthening your abilities because you need to be able to turn off the “noise”, the mind chatter that gets in the way of receiving clearer messages.

When it comes to reading cards, anyone can do it. With practice and study anyone with the drive to do so can learn to interpret the card meanings. But, anyone can also read cards intuitively without ever studying their meanings in a book. This can be accomplished by looking for meaning in the illustrations on each card. Plus, for example, knowing some basic numerology and the meaning of the elements (water, fire, earth & air) can help you get even more understanding in the card’s meaning.

Our psychic abilities can vary greatly. For example, what “claires” we naturally use. There are six. The first four I have listed are my strongest claires as well as the most common. Maybe you can figure out yours...

Clairaudience: clear hearing

This is one of my two strongest claires. I hear words, sounds and/or music in my mind. I think this may be my strongest because I’ve always retained and comprehended information better when I hear it spoken aloud more so than reading it.

Clairvoyance: clear seeing

This is when pictures and faces pop up in the mind's eye, aka. your third eye. Many people are highly visual and able to see and understand the meanings when they see it as an image. For me, seeing and hearing is where most of my psychic abilities lie.

Clairsentience: clear feeling

This is feeling a person or spirit's emotions or feeling another's physical pain. We may get a strong "gut" feeling, positive or negative, about someone or something.

Claircognizance: clear knowing.

Spirit gives us truths that just pop into our minds from out of nowhere. We can’t explain why we know something, we just do.

Clairalience means clear smelling

This is being able to smell odors that don't have any kind of physical source. Such as smelling the perfume or the cigarette smoke of a deceased relative. This may be used as a sign of their presence around you. This has happened to me only a few times with food smells.

Clairgustance means clear tasting

This is the ability to taste something that isn't actually there. This experience often will come from out of the blue when a deceased loved one is attempting to communicate a memory or association we have with a particular food or beverage that reminds us of them.

If you want to strengthen your claires, start with your intuition. Sit quietly at a time you won’t be disturbed and allow your senses to heighten. Be open and pay attention to the unexplainable clues. Never poo poo them, but instead bring out your inner Sherlock and try to put the pieces of the puzzle together. You’ll be amazed at what can happen.

And remember to practice, practice, practice.
